Lately, along a path I have begun to walk more often, flower heads as big as a face, tinged with pale green and white, sway gently in the breeze. Look closer, and you find that each large bloom is made up of countless small flowers. Small and delicate on their own, they lean on one another and bring a single full blossom into being.

It is the panicle hydrangea.

It does not announce its beauty. It is not showy like a rose, nor does it hold its head high like a sunflower. It simply blooms quietly at the tip of its branch, its head bowed a little. And yet, strangely, the eye lingers on it. It is like someone whose quiet presence stays with you long afterward.

The hydrangea blooms only after the spring flowers have gone and summer has deepened. It does not fret that it is late, nor does it go against its own season to bloom ahead of the others. As spring flowers give way, summer flowers open, and when summer flowers fade, autumn flowers come in their turn. Nature does not hurry anything into bloom. Each flower simply lives the season it has been given.

Each of us, too, has a season in which to bloom. A song sung long ago may reach people’s hearts only years later, and an actor who has performed on small stages for years may step into the bright lights only after white has settled into their hair.

A flower that blooms late is no less beautiful for it. In the time it takes to open, its roots grow deeper, and the flower comes to hold a color all its own. What matters, perhaps, is not fitting ourselves to someone else’s time, but living fully the time we have been given.

Just as the hydrangea’s small flowers gather into one full bloom, our days are made whole by small joys. Sunlight seeping through the trees, wind brushing the grass, birdsong from somewhere far off. Moments that seem like nothing fill the day and quietly restore a weary heart.

Walk slowly, and take the time to look. Do not be hurried by someone else’s time. Trust your own season. If you have not bloomed yet, it is only because your season has not yet come.
