The Riskiest Variable

What High-Functioning Controllers Fear Most Is Love

Maybe it isn’t failure that high-functioning controllers fear most. Failure hurts, but you can take it apart. You can work out what went wrong and which choice led to it. Work, money, responsibility: all of it can hurt, but it still fits, more or less, into the language of calculation. Love doesn’t. You can’t lock its terms down like a contract, you can’t predict how it’ll turn out like a strategy, and no one person’s resolve can keep it going. So for a controller, love isn’t the most beautiful thing in the world so much as the riskiest variable.

Love makes the other person big. When someone doesn’t matter to you, their silence is just silence. When it’s someone you love, silence can mean a hundred things. The bigger that person gets, the bigger their choices get, and their absence, and the hurt they’re capable of causing. Love also walks right over the boundaries controllers spent years building and introduces them to a stranger: the self that hopes, that waits, that needs reassurance, whose whole day can turn on one offhand remark. Once someone starts changing their inner weather, a controller feels like they no longer belong entirely to themselves. The other person grows larger, and the self that once felt so solid shrinks beside them. So love makes them feel alive and out of control at the same time, and what they notice first isn’t the aliveness. It’s how far it could shake them.

Most of all, love is risky because the other person is free. They can choose you, or they can leave. Even if the other person loves them, it may not look the way they need it to. That freedom is the heart of love, and it’s also what makes controllers so anxious, because it means nothing is guaranteed. So they try to turn love into a contract or a strategy. They aren’t wrong that standards and responsibilities matter, but push too far and every feeling becomes a condition, every gesture an obligation, every change a violation. Once they start calculating how much to show, when to pull back, and who is more affected, love stops being an encounter and becomes an operation.

But a strategy that protects love also hides it. It’s not that they take love lightly. It’s that it feels too dangerous. Love is supposed to be a place to rest, and for them it turns into the most complicated system they run.

What they’re really afraid of is the self they can’t control. Not knowing what the other person will do is bad enough, but not knowing how much they’ll hope, waver, and cling is worse. That’s why, in front of someone who truly moves them, they often get colder. They test, they pull back, sometimes they cut things off. It isn’t always because the love is missing. Often it’s because the love is so big that they’re scared of what it will do to them. They want it deeply, and that wanting is exactly what they dread.

That’s why love shows their structure so clearly. What they fear, what they try to control, what makes them put up their strongest defenses: it all shows up in front of love. Why can’t love be controlled? Because it includes the other person’s freedom. Because no matter how accurately you read someone, love isn’t something one person’s will can complete.
