Dear Starbucks Leadership Team,

I am a loyal Starbucks customer from South Korea. 

I have always admired Starbucks’ core values—so much so that I have visited the original Starbucks store in Seattle. 

I believed that Starbucks was a brand that stays true to its roots, walks alongside its customers, and fosters warm human connection through coffee. 

However, a recent incident permitted by Starbucks Korea has left me utterly appalled and deeply disturbed.

Starbucks Korea recently hosted a promotional event that openly mocked the May 18 Democratization Movement, a tragic yet sacred chapter in South Korea's history. 

The May 18 Movement was a pro-democracy uprising where innocent citizens stood up against a brutal military dictatorship. 

At the time, the dictator deployed tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, and military troops to slaughter innocent civilians. 

To ensure such a tragedy never happens again, South Korea remembers and solemnly commemorates May 18th every year.

Shockingly, Starbucks Korea chose this very period to hold an event called "Tank Day." 

This is not just a lapse in judgment; it is a profound insult to human rights and democracy. 

By referencing tanks on this day, Starbucks Korea has crossed the line into defending a massacre and mocking the citizens who resisted tyranny. 

This thoughtless action has ignited nationwide outrage across South Korea. 

To put this into perspective, this is equivalent to hosting a "Tank Day" event to commemorate the Nazi invasion of Poland.

Regrettably, the mockery did not stop there. The promotional phrasing used in the event directly borrowed a notorious line used by authorities in the past to cover up the torture and murder of a student activist during the dictatorship.

The South Korean public cannot and will not forgive Starbucks Korea for making light of our hard-earned democracy, which was built on the blood and sacrifices of our people. 

This incident severely damages the global reputation and ethical standing of the Starbucks brand.

As a South Korean citizen who loves democracy and once loved Starbucks, I urgently demand that Starbucks corporate headquarters investigate this matter immediately and take appropriate, decisive disciplinary action against those responsible.

I look forward to your swift and responsible response.

5.18 민주화 운동은 독재에 맞서 시민들이 저항한 운동입니다. 이때에 한국의 독재자는 탱크와 장갑차,헬기 및 군대를 투입하여 무고한 시민을 사살 하고 학살한 비극 입니다. 이런 비극이 한국에서 다시 일어나지 않고자 5월 18일을 기념하고 애도 하고 있습니다.

그러나 한국 스타벅스는 이러한날 탱크데이라는 이벤트를 개최 하며 조롱 하였습니다.

이는 조롱의 차원을 넘어 반 인륜적이고, 반민주적이며, 학살을 옹호하고 저항한 시민을 조롱하여 많은 한국 국민들이 분노 하고 있습니다.

이는 독일 나치가 폴란드를 침공 했을 당시를 탱크데이라 칭하는것과 같습니다.

한국 스타벅스의 조롱이 이뿐만이 아니였습니다.

이벤트에 씌여진 문구는 과거 한국의 독재자가 저항 하는 대학생을 붙잡아 고문하고 살해 했을때 관련자가 미디어에 나온 문구를 차용하여 사용 하였습니다.

한국 국민은 피로 쌓아 올린 소중한 민주주의를 조롱하는 한국 스타벅스를 용서 할수 없습니다.

적절한 조치를 기다리겠습니다.
