A man's work reveals who he truly is. In social life, he shows only the surface he wants the world to accept. His true self emerges in his small, unconscious actions and in the fleeting expressions that cross his face without his awareness. Sometimes people perfect their masks so completely that they eventually become the very persons they pretend to be.

But in the videos or music he creates, his true self is revealed defenselessly. Pretension exposes emptiness. A lathe painted to look like iron is still, in the end, only a lathe. No attempt to appear unusual can conceal a crude or foolish nature. To the keen observer, even the most casual piece of work reveals enough to sense what lies in a person's heart. And just as a person's true self surfaces through their work, the truth of their love surfaces through the way they give.

In W. Somerset Maugham's The Moon and Sixpence, there is a line that says, "A woman can forgive a man for the harm he does her, but she can never forgive him for the sacrifices he makes on her account." This suggests that sacrifice becomes painful when it places an emotional burden on another person.

A person may eventually forgive the harm someone has caused them. But when someone says, “I sacrificed this much for you, and I did everything you wanted. So you should respect me,” the sacrifice is no longer pure love. It becomes something closer to an emotional debt imposed on the other person.

Such sacrifice may appear to be love or devotion on the surface, but in truth, it makes it difficult for the other person to refuse, disagree, or walk away freely. It turns sacrifice into a weapon.

In relationships, what should be feared is not sacrifice itself, but the attitude of using sacrifice as a means of control. Sacrifice is not always beautiful. When it creates guilt, pressure, and obligation, it can become a deeper and more difficult wound that cannot be undone later. For this reason, it is wise to be cautious around people who make you feel indebted for what they have done for you.
