- Data: Record number have left ICE amid hiring spree
- Flush with cash to fulfill President Donald Trump’s mass deportation agenda, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement began a hiring spree last year that more than doubled its number of agents and officers. In the first half of this year, nearly 3,000 have left ICE, a record number according to a new data analysis by USA TODAY. ● Historically, most who leave the agency retire. But this year the majority who parted ways with ICE quit or were fired. ● In just the first half of 2026, more people have quit than in any other full calendar year since 2012, the first available year of data from the federal Office of Personnel Management. Terminations so far this year are higher than the whole decade before the second Trump administration combined.
- Experts and former officials at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the mass exit of officers could stem from new hiring practices, low morale and other changes.
- About this series
- For this four-part series, the USA TODAY Network spent months assessing the Trump administration’s expansion of immigration enforcement, digging into its plans for more detention space, the conditions inside and the background of one of its key contractors. Our journalists reported in communities across the nation, sifting through public records and interviewing people on all sides of the debate.

- The Flydubai passengers in fight for control of plane
- None of the 174 passengers on board Wednesday morning’s Flydubai flight FZ 1073 for Tel Aviv could have known that their plane journey would soon be broadcast worldwide as a narrowly averted disaster. About two hours into the flight, one pilot stabbed the other, triggering a fight involving passengers over the fate of the plane, which nosedived 18,000 feet in just 90 seconds. Flight FZ 1073 eventually landed safely at Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk airport.
