- LEARNING LINCOLN’S LESSONS
- A visit to Honest Abe’s birthplace offers perspective as America celebrates its 250th anniversary
- The 56 steps, cut from pink granite, ascend to a neoclassical temple that seems plucked from ancient Greece and deposited on a Kentucky hilltop. One for each year of President Abraham Lincoln’s life. ● If the first eight steps, rising amid the site’s oak and maple trees, can be viewed as his birth and boyhood in the state, those at the summit reflect his later years of anguish and trial. ● Division. Slavery. Civil War. All etched into the face of a man who spent his presidency fighting to hold together a nation that seemed determined to tear itself apart. ● Here, on a recent day at the Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park near Hodgenville, Kentucky, visitors found inside the memorial a fragile one-room log cabin symbolizing the humble origins of that effort – one that helped the country reach its semiquincentennial and enter into its next chapter. ● “If there is no Lincoln, then there is no America 250,” said Harold Holzer, a prominent Lincoln author and scholar.

- THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
- Americans are restless.
- We sought independence 250 years ago as a nation in pursuit of unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We moved across the land in covered wagons searching for prosperity. We raced toward space, believing it was a new frontier for knowledge and peace.
